Systems Engineer (Trainee)

The Barbados Light & Power Company Limited is seeking applications from suitably qualified professionals to fill the position of Trainee Systems Engineer. Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager/Engineering Manager, the Trainee Systems Engineer will be responsible for developing engineering designs, specifications and standards for modifications to the Company’s power systems. The Incumbent will also be required to design, construct, maintain, and troubleshoot engineering systems and deliver engineering solutions to ensure the delivery of a reliable, efficient, safe and economical energy solutions to customers.

 

The Incumbent will function as a technical specialist; providing oversight on projects of varying complexity and supervision of multi-disciplinary teams. The Incumbent will primarily be assigned to any of the business areas requiring engineering, to manage these projects and/operations within schedule and budget limitations while coordinating the activities of teams, contractors and vendors. They may also be required to work within a shift system and/or in an industrial or office environment, as assigned or directed.

 

Job Duties include:

  • Participates in the development, implementation and monitoring of comprehensive plans for improvement to the Company’s systems.
  • Provides technical and commercial leadership as well as engineering support to business units including customer related initiatives based on market intelligence.
  • Provides engineering analysis and technical support across the business including fault identification, troubleshooting including operations and maintenance activities to ensure optimal utilization of power system facilities to meet customer demands for energy and/or associated services.
  • Recommends and implements short and long range system planning measures for improved asset performance, reliability and sustainability. 
  • Reviews existing systems, processes, procedures and work instructions, recommends and implements appropriate system and plant reliability and process improvements and evaluates their effectiveness.
  • Applies engineering solutions to optimize the application of emerging technologies for Grid Enhancement.
  • Design system upgrades to improve the efficiency and reliability of the electrical supply to customers.
  • Coordinates all required regulatory inspections of machinery and equipment.
  • Develops technical and functional specifications as well as performance requirements for equipment and systems. Defines system requirements, material specifications and cost effective solutions.
  • Manages projects of varying complexities including scope, scheduling, budgeting, procurement and managing the resources to ensure that projects are completed within time and budget.
  • Oversees testing, equipment specification, installation and commissioning to ensure that equipment and systems are functioning according to specifications and safety standards.
  • Prepares reports for management personnel to aid in business decision making and reporting.
  • Interacts with internal and external customers to determine the needs of customers and offer solutions.
  • Assists with the procurement of parts, components, supplies and equipment for the business.
  • Represents the Company on various local and regional power systems planning committees and contributes to the evaluation of opportunities locally and in other territories.
  • Provides support and coverage during outages and emergencies for call out on rostered duty and on non-rostered duty during natural disasters, blackouts and any other condition that impairs service or the safety of service.
  • Assists with the preparation of budgets, authorization of expenditure, receipt of goods and services and analysis of expenditure.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology or a related field
  • At least 4 years’ post-graduate on-the-job training in electrical or mechanical power systems engineering suitable for professional registration in an electric or other energy and/or industry related field would be an asset
  • Registered Professional Engineer license would be an asset
  • Project management experience spanning both system design and field work would be an asset
